Shabono structures by the Yanomami
From southern Venezuela and northern Brazil, the Yanomami built Shabonos as temporary dwellings for the whole community. Built using thatched palm leaves and wood these structures were built in clearings in the jungle. Each family would have their own personal area within the Shabono.

An Arab sheikh has had his first name carved into the sand of the island he owns in letters so large they can be seem from space. Hamad bin Hamdan al Nahyan (the articles are calling him Al Ahyan, but that’s incorrect) is a member of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi. The letters are half a mile high. It’s interesting, though, that he chose “HAMAD” instead of “حمد.”

Each constellation is a triangulated structure made out of clear ø 0.6mm nylon line, ø 0.2mm polyethylene braid, ø 0.75mm fibre optic and a solar powered LED. During the day, the battery is being recharged by the solar panel and the circuit switches ON the LED when it is dark enough to observe stars.In order to have the constellation in the air, the team uses a telescopic catapult to fix the structure on top of trees.

Cloud Vortices

Cloud vortices, or von Kármán vortices, create patterns in the sky near the Cape Verde Islands off northwestern Africa (see map). The vortices are caused by wind rushing over the islands. (Pictures: “New Cloud Type Discovered?”)

Zeeland, The Netherlands is listed too, but I like this pointillist view from Garden City, Kansas, best. It was taken by the USGS’ Landsat 7 satellite on Sept. 25, 2000 and is a false-color composite made using data from near infrared, red and green wavelengths and sharpened with a panchromatic sensor. The red areas actually represent the greenest vegetation. Bare soil or dead vegetation ranges from white to green or brown.
