According to the IEEE Computer Society, Computer has been their flagship publication for over 40 years. Out of the entire run, most of the late 70′s and early 80′s covers had the best art direction by a country mile. I wrangled a bunch of them over here to share, but you can see view all the back issues in their entirety on the IEEE Website.

The BMW M1, 1978.

The BMW M1 was unveiled 30 years ago as the first car created independently by the then BMW Motorsport Division. It was a racing car which BMW customers could also drive on the road, a unique project which had to overcome some tricky administrative hurdles before getting off the ground. Up to this date, it is considered to be the one and only BMW supercar ever produced.
The M1 coupe was hand-built between 1978 and 1981 as a homologation special for sports car racing. The body was designed by Giugiaro, taking inspiration from the 1972 BMW Turbo show car. At the time of its launch, it was one of the fastest and most dynamic cars on the market. It featured a 277 horsepower 3.5-liter straight-six engine and could reach speeds in excess of 160 mph. The redline came at 7,000 rpm and the M1 was capable of accelerating from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds.
Only 456 production M1s were built, making it one of BMW’s rarest models.

My teapot ( a derivative of the Utah teapot ). 3D printed by an Ultimaker.

Sliced in Cura.

The re404 Teapot at 24H FABFEST, Protospace, Utrecht.

Some statistics:
614 kb of gcode for lid / 4.3 MB of gcode for pot.
1.5 hrs of printing for lid / 12.25 hrs of printing for pot
about 0.5 kg of PLA
one epic printer failure at about 2/3 of the print of the pot (thanks to Joris for his quick repair !)
… and one leaking hole in the spout because of that. :(
Altogether pretty ridiculous, so I’m gonna go back to my model and optimize it … in a lot of ways.
Video of the actual pouring coming soon in an extra video post.

General Electric Show ‘n Tell - Tonschau - Fonovisore

The Show ‘n Tell was a toy combination record player and filmstrip viewer manufactured by General Electric from the 1950s to the 1970s.

It resembled a television set, but had a record player on the top. Records and slides were sold for it in combination. The slide strip, which was a flat plastic key 8 inches long containing a strip of 16mm color film, was inserted into the top of the device. As the record played (typically telling a story), the slide strip, through which the images were projected on the screen, would automatically advance to illustrate it. The mechanism by which the slide advanced was purely mechanical, and was based on the rotation of the turntable, so proper operation required manually spinning it a few revolutions before beginning the presentation.

It also functioned as a standard record player, able to play 16, 33⅓, 45, and 78 RPM records through its built-in speaker.

The Show ‘n Tell was also sold as the Show ‘n Tell Phono-Viewer by CBS Toys, in the early 1980s, under the brand name “Child Guidance.” These devices, which were drastically redesigned from their earlier version, only had two speeds (33⅓ and 45), and could not play full 12” LPs. However, the Phono-Viewer could optionally move the projected image off the built-in screen and onto an outside surface (such as a wall or screen).

Licensed film strip and record packages were produced for many different children’s properties, including Disney and Sesame Street.

The Porsche 917/30 was one of the craziest cars ever built. It could hit 60MPH in under 3 seconds, and go beyond 240MPH. In Can-Am qualifying trim it made 1,580HP, but weighed less than 2,000lbs. It was before coal-into-diamonds down-force, so the first cars were scary, getting rear lift at high speed.
[…]
Eventually they sorted out that pesky “HOLY SHIT I CANT STEER!” issue, and the car was incredible, winning the overall for Porsche in 1970 and 1971. In early 70s Can-Am racing it got even faster. Expanded to 5.4-liters they made 1,100HP in race trim, and 1,580HP in qualifying trim, running 39 pounds of boost. The car weighs 1,800 ******* pounds. No HANS device, helmets as strong as a bucket, and fire suppression meant praying for rain immediately after impact. Crazy. Dangerous. Genius. Want.
